How common is statin muscle pain?
In large studies where people did not know whether they were taking a statin or a placebo, muscle aches were reported almost as often with the placebo. That does not mean your aches are imaginary, but it does mean other causes are worth checking, and that most people can find a statin plan that works.

Steps to try with your clinician
- Check for other causes: thyroid, vitamin D, kidney function and new exercise.
- Take a short planned break to see whether the aches go away and return when restarting.
- Lower the dose or switch to a different statin.
- Try taking it every other day or a few times a week.
- Add or switch to non-statin options such as ezetimibe or newer medicines.
Why it is worth persisting
Statins lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes, especially for people with heart disease, diabetes or very high LDL. Finding a tolerable option protects you for years. If you decide not to take a statin, we will help you lower your risk in other ways.

Questions people ask
Should I stop my statin if my muscles hurt?
Talk to us first. A planned pause can help figure out whether the statin is the cause.
Does CoQ10 help statin muscle pain?
Studies are mixed. It is generally safe, but evidence that it helps is limited.
Can I take a statin every other day?
Some statins, such as rosuvastatin and atorvastatin, work well with less frequent dosing for people who cannot take them daily.
