How to take it
- Take it at the same time every day.
- Swallow it with a full glass of water.
- Wait 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast or coffee, or take it at bedtime on an empty stomach.
- If you miss a dose, take it when you remember the same day; do not double up the next day unless advised.

What gets in the way
- Calcium and iron supplements, multivitamins: separate by 4 hours.
- Antacids and some acid reducers.
- Coffee and soy: wait at least 30 to 60 minutes.
- High-fiber meals right after taking it.
- Some medicines, such as cholestyramine and sucralfate.
- Biotin supplements can make thyroid blood tests look wrong; stop them 2 to 3 days before testing.
Monitoring
We check your TSH about six weeks after starting or changing the dose, then every 6 to 12 months once stable. Pregnancy, weight changes, new medicines and aging can all change the dose you need.

How we can help

Questions people ask
Can I take levothyroxine at night?
Yes, if it is at least three to four hours after your last meal. Some people find this easier and absorb it well.
Does it matter if I switch brands?
Small differences between products can change your levels. If your pharmacy switches, we may recheck your TSH.
How long until I feel better?
Some people feel better within a few weeks, but it can take a few months to find the right dose.
