How the thyroid affects weight
Thyroid hormone sets the pace of your metabolism. When it is low, you burn slightly fewer calories, hold on to more salt and water, and often feel tired and less active. Together, these lead to gradual weight gain. Other signs include feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, thinning hair and heavier periods.

What happens with treatment
Levothyroxine replaces the missing hormone. It takes four to six weeks for levels to settle after each dose change, and we adjust the dose based on your TSH. Many people lose a few pounds of fluid as levels normalize and find it easier to be active once energy returns. See our guide on taking levothyroxine correctly.
If the weight is not budging
If your thyroid levels are in range and weight is still an issue, other factors are usually involved: midlife hormone changes, less muscle, poor sleep, stress, medicines and eating patterns. These are all workable. Our weight management program looks at the whole picture and includes medicine when it is appropriate.

How we can help
We test your thyroid, start and fine-tune treatment, and recheck levels at discounted cash prices. If weight remains a struggle, we build a plan with you rather than blaming your thyroid or you.
Questions people ask
Will I lose weight once my thyroid is treated?
Often a little, mainly fluid. Larger losses usually need changes in eating, activity and sleep too.
Can I take more thyroid medicine to lose weight?
No. Too much thyroid hormone can cause a racing heart, bone loss and anxiety.
What TSH level is normal?
Most labs use a range of about 0.4 to 4.5 mIU/L, though targets vary by age, pregnancy and symptoms.
