High blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Learn the facts behind common myths, when to worry and why regular checks matter.

Common myths

  • “I would feel it if my blood pressure were high.” Usually you would not.
  • “My headache means my pressure is up.” Pain and stress can raise blood pressure a little, not the other way round.
  • “It is only high at the doctor’s office.” Sometimes true (white coat effect), but home readings are needed to know.
  • “I can stop medicine once my numbers are normal.” Normal readings often mean the medicine is working.

Measure it the right way

Use a validated upper-arm cuff, sit quietly for five minutes with your back supported and feet flat, keep your arm at heart level, and take two readings a minute apart, morning and evening, for a week. Our guide to home blood pressure monitors walks you through it.

Questions people ask

What should I do with a reading of 180/120 but no symptoms?

Rest for five minutes and recheck. If it is still that high, contact your clinician the same day. If you have symptoms, call 911.

Can high blood pressure cause nosebleeds?

Usually not. Most nosebleeds come from dry air or irritation.

How often should I check my blood pressure?

At least once a year if normal; more often, including home monitoring, if it is elevated or treated.
