What a nurse practitioner does
- Diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions
- Orders and interprets labs and imaging
- Prescribes medicines
- Provides preventive care and screening
- Coordinates referrals to specialists
- Focuses on education and whole-person care

Training and certification
Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who complete a graduate degree and supervised clinical training, then pass a national board certification exam. “NP-C” indicates national certification as a family nurse practitioner. NPs maintain their certification through ongoing education.
